What We Believe
Our Wesleyan Roots
We honor our Wesleyan roots: Do no harm. Do good. Stay in love with God.
Jesus Christ and Scripture
We believe the Bible is primary and authoritative but we lean heavily on the teachings of Jesus Christ for our inspiration.
Tradition
We recognize the importance of tradition in planning for the future so long as it does not conflict with Christ’s teachings.
Reason
We value Reason, Experience, critical thinking, and reflection in making sense of Scripture and Tradition and apply them to contemporary situations.
Experience
We acknowledge personal and communal religious experience as another source of insight into God’s truth.
A Balanced Approach
We believe that all these operate in harmony and love to form the basis for a balanced and holistic approach to understanding the Christian faith.
Holy Communion and Baptism
Holy Communion in the United Methodist Church is open to all people, regardless of age, church affiliation, or lifestyle. You do not need to be baptized or a member of any church to take Communion. St. Matthew uses only unfermented grape juice and gluten-free bread for Communion.
Baptism is not necessary for participation in any church activities. St. Matthew baptizes infants, children, youth, and adults. If you have questions, or are interested in being baptized, please contact the church pastor.
For additional information on the United Methodist views on Baptism or Communion, please refer to the UMC website.
