Food Boxes
Upcoming 7:30 a.m. distributions: Saturdays January 3, 17, & 31, 2026
St. Matthew started our Food Box ministry in 2017. Since that very first Saturday morning, we are proud to say we have never missed our regular schedule, even during COVID-19 closures!
Everyone needs a little help from time to time, and we are blessed to have this opportunity to share food with our neighbors. With donations from church members and partnerships with Midwest Food Bank, Waste Not, and the local Bishops' Storehouse of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, St. Matthew fills boxes with food to feed a family of four for 3-4 days. An enthusiastic group of volunteers—many of them past recipients of food boxes themselves—hand out boxes to upwards of 60 families biweekly.
Boxes of food are given out every other Saturday morning (dates below) from approximately 7:15 a.m. until the boxes are gone (usually 8:00 a.m.) with an average of 55 boxes given out each time. If you wish to participate in this program, please drive to the church (2540 W. Baseline Rd, Mesa, AZ) prior to 7:15 a.m. on our giveaway day. The line starts in the West parking lot (accessible from Baseline or Javelina). Contact the church office (email or call (480) 838-7309) for more information.
As always, we are collecting donations of food. We anticipate an unprecedented call for food assistance this month and for the foreseeable future. If you are able to help, please consider bringing nonperishable food, including small jars of peanut butter, cans of tuna or chicken, canned vegetables, pasta, canned pasta sauce, and cereal, to the church Sunday morning or during the week while the office is open. We also love to receive gift cards to local grocery stores, which allow us to supplement the donations as needed. And empty egg cartons (6- or 12-count) let us split up bulk egg purchases into family-sized portions.
Be sure to arrive before 7:15 Saturday morning!

La Casita Preschool
We particularly want to acknowledge La Casita Preschool, who hosted a food drive in October-November 2025 and passed their donations on to us. Thank you to La Casita and to their parents and community who dropped off food! We're all working to make our neighborhood stronger!
Messages of thanks

I want to send a very warm thank you to St. Matthew United Methodist Church in Mesa, AZ. The wonderfully generous offerings of food, beverages, & miscellaneous other household supplies and donations are so appreciated. These food boxes have been a lifesaver during some lean times. Families and individuals like me who are experiencing hardships, whether health or financial, this assistance is invaluable.

St. Matthew United Methodist Church, and the many gracefully kind and amazing volunteers, have absolutely made this happen. Every other Saturday, those of us in need come to the church to receive these food boxes and supplies. It’s so touching to see such caring and dedicated people, giving their time to help serve. It is truly heartfelt and appreciated more than any of us can ever express. Thank you again for this program, we are blessed, and hopefully one day can return the grace and kindness.

Forever Grateful,
Michele

I have been sharing the food boxes that the St. Matthew United Methodist Church, in partnership with Midwest Food Bank, provides free twice a month since the program started. I have been a regular recipient of two, family bags and other donated fruits, vegetables and other surprises, such as flowers, diapers, household products etc. These food boxes help to eliminate food insecurity amongst the 15 people I share the food with, and they are forever and beyond grateful.

I am so proud of the work that they do, the people they are, the difference they make and the lives they touch. Hopefully these food box services will continue because it fills a void that most people are ashamed to talk about.

With peace, love and continuous blessings to this crew.

We started coming here about two years ago and we cannot tell you how blessed we have been with all the care we have received from the people here. The products we have received are some that we have never bought because of the cost.  We have discovered many new products.  My husband went thru cancer, myself heart operations, so all of the food has been a blessing.  To all of you who have helped provide us with all of the food we say, “Thank you, God bless, and you’ll be in our prayers.”

Thank you again,
